An important disease area for poultry research is the study of avian influenza, which can be investigated using our chicken and duck immune marker antibodies.

Avian flu (bird flu) was initially seen in wild birds, but has now become transmissible between species leading to serious outbreaks amongst poultry. The virus exists in several strains, with current research focused on the H5N1 subtype which mutates into a highly pathogenic version. As an aid to studying avian flu, we offer an ELISA validated antibody for detection of the H5N1 influenza virus.

Hemagglutinin is an antigenic glycoprotein which allows viral attachment and entry into the cell. Sixteen subtypes of hemagglutinin (H1-H16) have been described, of which H1, H2 and H3 infect humans. H5 and H7 normally result in avian disease, with some highly pathogenic H5N1 strains causing 100% mortality in poultry. Hemagglutinin is one of the most medically relevant antigens on influenza as it is a target for antiviral drugs and antibodies.
