14-3-3 proteins are of key research interest as they regulate many cellular processes and are highly conserved. There are seven mammalian isoforms of 14-3-3; beta, gamma, zeta, epsilon, tau, eta, and sigma, while the alpha and delta isoforms are phosphorylated.

Research studies suggest that 14-3-3 isoforms are differentially regulated in various diseases, particularly in:

  • Cancer - Expression of 14-3-3 sigma is lost in carcinoma of the breast, ovary, endometrium, prostate, liver, skin and lung.
  • Neurological disorders - 14-3-3 eta forms part of Lewy bodies in Parkinson’s disease and is also linked to early onset schizophrenia. 14-3-3 is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease and prion diseases such as CJD.
