Cell Growth and Proliferation Reagents

alamarBlue assay

Cell growth and proliferation assays are used to measure the health of various cell types and to indicate altered growth states, such as those due to cancer or cytotoxicity.

While cell counts can provide a quick and simple measure of cell viability, it is usually more practical to directly measure the metabolic activity or DNA synthesis rates of a cell population and use these as a gauge of cell growth, cell proliferation, and cell viability.

AbD Serotec offers two methods for investigating cell growth and cell proliferation:

The alamarBlue® Assay measures cellular metabolism with rapid, sensitive, and quantitative colorimetric and fluorimetric readouts which are suitable for high throughput. It also offers several key advantages over traditional MTT and XTT assays:

  • Water soluble, with no DMSO extraction steps required
  • Highly stable, allowing for continuous reading over several days in culture
  • Wide usage, because it is adequately metabolized by all cell types

In addition it is non toxic to cells and people. Access our alamarBlue® Resource Page for FAQs, online calculators, worked examples, references, and more.

Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) Antibodies are routinely used in various cell growth and kinetic studies to detect BrdU, a thymidine analog, which is incorporated during DNA synthesis in dividing cells.

Our anti-BrdU antibodies (clones BU1/75 & Bu20a) are available in purified and conjugated formats, and are suitable for detecting DNA synthesis by ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunohistological methods. Visit our BrdU Resource Page for more information.
