Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an example of adult stem cell and are multipotent. MSCs can give rise to many cell types found in skeletal tissues such as adipocytes, cartilage, bone, tendon and ligaments, and muscle.  They can also differentiate into other non-skeletal tissue cells such as endothelial cells, heart muscle cells, pancreatic islet cells and nerves.

Identifying Mesenchymal Stem Cells

MSCs were initially isolated from bone marrow samples, but are also present in multiple tissue types including umbilical cord and fat tissue. The ability to be isolated from different tissue types, giving rise to heterogenous and abundant population of cells with high differentiation potential, means that they are the most commonly used stem cells in regenerative medicine. 

Common markers for MSCs cells include: positive for CD105, CD90 and CD73 and negative for CD14, CD34 and CD31.
